There are a lot of people out there talking about why you need a blog, and why you need to share your content, but nobody manages to hit the nail quite as squarely on the head as Chris Lema does in this presentation filmed back in the autumn at WordCamp San Francisco 2014.
In this carefully thought out talk Chris Lema takes us through a number of stories that illustrate the shifts in marketing since the birth of the world wide web and blogging. Brands no longer get to tell you who and what they are by monopolising the media, today brands are defined by their users through blogs, reviews and social media. Famous brands can try and tell you who and what they are but ultimately the users get to decide, a concept that would have been simply unimaginable even as recently as the first half of the 90s.
So with this change in the balance of power businesses have to think differently and act differently. Starting a business in 2015 is very different to starting a business in 1985, and this video is one of the best short introductions to that process that I’ve seen. If you’re thinking about starting a business and want to know how a blog will fit into that, or if you’re thinking about becoming a blogger but are unsure how to go about it, or if you have a blog and need to breathe new life into it, then I strongly urge you to watch this video. Think on it for a week or two. Then watch it again.
