Tip 11: Beware the snake oil and the silver bullet

Offers that sound too good to be true are, well, too good to be true.

Website quick tip #11:

If it sounds too good to be true, it is. Website promotion is no simple task, there are no silver bullets but there are a lot of snake oil salesmen out there. Keep in mind that everything you can do to promote your website is either:

  • Free, with an effort involved, or
  • Involves minimal effort on your part but does require parting with cash.

So when you inevitably receive an email stating that, for just $$$ they can make your website number 1 in Google, you can be fairly safe in assuming that it’s a con. In fact many such emails involve so-called “black hat” (i.e. nefarious) methods of attempting to promote your website. These techniques will backfire and result in a penalty from the search engines.

We’ve seen customers get sucked in by these tricks before now (see How Link Building Could Bankrupt Your Business). Putting them right is a lengthy and VERY expensive process, during which your site would be completely unavailable in the major search engines. This is not a scenario you want to find yourself in!
